I Am My Sister's Keeper.

Who Elected Me As The Technology Guru?

I am not certain when I was elected but whenever anyone in my circle has computer issues or questions, my name magically comes up as the person to call for assistance. It does not matter what circle: home, work, school, my online family, I am the one they call on. This can become quite a heavy load to shoulder because it comes with such high expectations. I have never been enrolled in a computer course. I have pretty much dog paddled and learned hands on - usually with the computer cover open and my hands inside trying to figure out what made it work.

When it comes to solving other people's computer problems, the resolution is usually Operator Error or the typical Computer-Superior-to-Operator error, I swoop in with my analytical mind and diagnostic eye and save the day. It keeps my mind razor sharp and my “Are you serious” quota high.

When my job needed a website, I was the one sent for training. Once again, I was credited with knowledge that I did not possess. I had no idea how to design a website but once again, I commenced to dog paddling. I learned the basics of Adobe Dreamweaver during a 2-day training session. Five years later, I was sent to a one-day refresher course on Adobe Contribute. The school district was leaning more towards content management than original content. By that time, I had already learned the fundamentals of web design, created a slick website for my job and had learned to swim AND fish!

How I Became The Creative Lady®

I have never been enrolled in an art class - not even an Arts and Crafts class but I have had good intentions to do so. I am NOT the traditional artist. My creativity comes from my surroundings. I grew up watching my Mississippi Grandmother and her friends during the summer using scraps of rags to create fabric for quilts that kept us warm all winter.

To be honest, back then, I could not stand it! During those lazy days of summer, I wanted to lie in bed and keep cool and not have to maneuver through their piles of old clothes being ripped to shreds. The ladies used to call me when they needed their needles rethreaded. They would say, “Come here young eyes and thread this needle”. I used to think it was so funny. I would say to myself, “I’m never getting old!” Ha! The joke’s on me AND my four eyes.

Since then, I have developed my own individualized brand of creativity. I learn by doing. I have made tons of mistakes and have quite a few UFOs (Unfinished Objects) lying around. But I have also had quite a few successes. I have never been able to nail down a specialty as I am truly as Josephine of All Trades. I make jewelry, and of course, create quilts.

I am not a traditional quilter creating Diamond Patches, Sue Bonnets and Jelly Roll quilts. I create artsy, mixed media quilts. I suppose they could be wall hangings but I never try to fit them into a category. I just like to go wherever the creative spirit leads me. Whether it's cooking, sewing or polishing my nails, it has to be creative!

Life And All Points In Between

Technology and Creativity makes up the Life of The Creative Lady. I am a currently public school library media specialist by day but by night and all points and times in between, I AM The Creative Lady®. I am pursuing and dreaming of the day when I turn in my keys and skip out the door of that pressure cooker for the last time, I am working in my field of study. Although I have managed to carve out the perfect niche that blends both my Bachelor’s Degree in English/Communications and my Masters Degree in Library Science, I suffer from Extreme Job Burnout!

My life includes shareable moments that have nothing to do with Technology or Creativity but they both seem to find their way into all aspects of my life including cooking, traveling and relationships!

Whether it is about my natural hair or helpful technology tips, I find myself sharing educational tutorials online. My online audience is much more receptive than trying to teach the Dewey Decimal System to a group of yawing middle school students!

Yes, I am a Content Creator and Partner on YouTube! I joined in 2007 after learning there were videos posted not only about funny cats but also about natural hair! I began to post random videos and slideshow of my natural hair journey for my own personal documentation.  I had no idea that other people would be interested and would subscribe to my channel. I was haphazardly and unintentionally building an audience. My YouTube natural hair journey was evolving into something that I did not plan – a way to combine many things in which I am passionate: creating videos talking about natural hair, sharing tips and tutorials, forming global friendships with my “Cybersisters” and earning money!

I became a Google Adsense-Revenue Sharing-Full YouTube Partner in December 2010. I’ve since had the crash On The Job Training (OTJT) course in marketing, branding, intellectual property & copyrights, social networking and a refresher course in video editing. You can learn more about my YouTube journey to partnership on my YouTube page.
